Getting help (irc channel)

Connecting to IRC

I'm writing this guide if you're interested in joining the #somadev channel on freenode using a proper IRC client, similar to using a MSN client or a AIM client.

What is irc?

IRC stands for internet relay chat and is similar to programs such as MSN Messenger, Yahoo Messenger and AIM, in that you can type messages in real time, Internet relay chat is a protocol that things called IRC clients use, IRC was popular in the 90s.

One of the most popular irc clients mIRC is pictured below:

Installing mIRC

1. go to http://www.mirc.com/get.html
2. click download mIRC
3. click download now on the next page (download.com)
4. click run, open or save depending on your browser
5. run the downloaded .exe
6. next your way through the installation until it's finished

Using mIRC

This is probably the hardest part for new comers to IRC

I suggest you fake your full name and email address for privacy reasons, and choose a nickname to use while chatting. Click Servers below Connect on the left hand side

Here is where you need to find Freenode on the server list, find and select freenode then click select, which will take you back to the menu you were just on, at this point you can just press the Connect button

You should see a new pop up telling you you're connecting to freenode, if you're having trouble I recommend pressing the thunder icon twice, once it's finished connecting you should get this screen:

You can close that pop up, it's pretty annoying and type:

Code: Select all
/j #somadev

to join the somadev channel you can also browse other channels with the list command here:

Code: Select all
/list

and change your nickname with:

Code: Select all
/nick newnamehere

A full list of commands can be found here: http://www.ircbeginner.com/ircinfo/ircc-commands.html

once you've joined the channel you're all set you can talk to everyone just by typing in the box at the bottom and pressing enter you can minimise the client which will send it to the system tray then come back later and see what people have been talking about.

Getting help

You can access our IRC channel directly by going to http://webchat.freenode.net/?channels=somadev where you can talk to us directly and ask questions this is a web based client for IRC so it will disconnect you if you close the page, if spent any time in the channel it's advisable to get a IRC client as described above for convenience (and so you can slap finito with a large fish )

A few words on etiquette

Although it's not a rule it would be appreciated if you could make an attempt at spelling correctly and at very least avoiding text speech, it's just respectful while helping you we will make the effort to type full English while no one is going to pull you up on spelling mistakes it's just polite and makes dealing with your problem/reading your messages easier.

Alternatively here is a screencast for using Trillian
