Every1s asking ingame how long the server will be up. Could we have some information on the long and short term plans of this server? Playing both h/dsoma these rates arnt here to stay...so what are we testing and untill when, and then what?

Great work tho, im a fan of keeping it as close to the original.

just playing the server is the test. we dont really need to know whats going on behind the scene's as much of it is out of our comprehension.

I grasp the concept of a test server- Ive tested most of it and found nothing wrong so far. Not saying that ive tested everything. Theres problems other people have found.

Im curious why I (and others) dont need to know. To have some idea of where we are going would be good for everyone putting time into this. i.e. are we going to see anything major to be added thats new or not? Are we looking at weeks, months or years of testing? Whats the main aim of the testing?

The aim of testing at this stage is mainly to

a) bring faith for people who doubted that somadev would come back and to allow people to see progress is happening and soma is still be actively developed this is important for the community to see somadev as a project is alive and well.

b) to test the technology behind the server, not so much the content of the server (yet), mainly the oneperone extension that finito is working on, once it's finished it'll be released for other servers to use too, so other developers can change advanced settings that are hard coded into the oneperone too and of course the final release of somadev will be using the extension.

I imagine once the oneperone extension is mature enough and the client has a number of issues fixed, the server will then act as a tangible test bed for ideas to improve game play but we're not really at that stage yet

after the game has been improved and is deemed playable for players not used to soma, and fans a like, things like marketing and commercialisation can start happening

I don't speak for the somadev project but I think this is a fair assumption

Thnaks for giving us the background ideas Arcanine. This is great information and what the community needs to find out. Its also exciting to think of the future and its great to see soma as a game can not only survive but even grow. I imagine once its ready it will be very marketable. Im more excited when ideas can be added when the time comes.

Couldn't agree more, i'm often getting carried away with ideas one of the main downfalls of being slightly creative. Finito is doing a great job of structuring the server so it can be expanded quickly and easily in the future.

Its a credit to the team that fin is doing it that way because imo soma really died because of lack of creative spirit. I mean sure there was patches and some maps etc but nothing altered gameplay. Nothing made you think 'hey thats neat'. They never took onboard community ideas which when you think about it (it would have been hard becuase of the language barriers and it was in different countries) was sad because we actually played the game. I dont know what can and cant be changed or added but it seems the team care about the project and thats half the battle as shown by esomas death.
